What is “Central Albanian”?
Central Albanian refers to the speech around Tirana, Durrës, Elbasan, Kavajë, Peqin, Lushnjë, and parts of Fier, Berat, lying near the historic Gheg–Tosk divide (the Shkumbin River). It is Tosk-based like the official standard, but casual, simplified, and rich in slang.
Geography
- North of divide: Shkodër, Kukës, Lezhë (Gheg).
- Central zone: Tirana, Durrës, Elbasan, Kavajë, Lushnjë, parts of Fier/Berat.
- Southward: Vlorë, Gjirokastër, Korçë (Tosk).
