When we want to ask for permission to do something in German we use the verb dürfen and alternatively the verb können-Darf ich?,Kann ich?
Listen to the phrases here.
Can I sit here?
Darf ich hier sitzen?
Can I sit here?
Kann ich mich hier hinsetzen?
Can I smoke here?Is smoking allowed here?
Darf ich hier rauchen?
Can I go now?
Kann ich jetzt gehen?
But when we use the word 'nicht' with these two verbs- dürfen and können-then this means that something is forbiden.
You can't smoke here.Smoking is not allowed here.
Hier darf man nich rauchen
Hier kann man nich rauchen
